About Us

This site is called earthSOS (Earth: Sustainable and Organic Solutions), for a number of reasons.

Some of the main ideas that we want to incorporate are sustainability and organic practices and that the earth is an integral part of our life. We also want to create an information source that is very easy to use and helps the people looking to make change, do just that. We are trying to accomplish this by doing as much research as we can and by working with our visitors to build the site together.

We believe that we are in a time of great change where the human race is going to suffer the consequences of limitless growth, rising populations and a lack of individual responsibility. We strive to reverse this effect through education and by promoting interconnectedness within the communities we live and with the Earth itself.

To sustain is defined as to keep alive or to maintain. Sustainability is about maintaining life by not dominating and controlling it for the benefit of one species. It is a way of living that allows other forms of life to flourish or fall at a natural rate without dis-harmonic human influence.

Consumer Conciousness

Do you know the journey your clothes took before you got them? Are you using a product that is shipped a great distance when a comparable local product is available? Is the product recyclable or biodegradable? Do you really need this item? These are the questions we need to ask ourselves as smart shoppers in today's consumption oriented society. Most people reading this site will have at least 50 different products just in the room they are sitting in at the computer.

In encouraging others to be aware/inquire about what they consume, we here at earthSOS are committed to being aware of our supply line. If we are selling something, we will do our best to know where it came from and who made it - and to pass that information on to you.

Examples of this are as follows:

  • From manufacturer to earthSOS - this means that the manufacturer sends the product directly to us, which we then send on to the end user.
  • Manufacturer to end user - in these situations, the manufacturer sends the product directly from its facility to the end user's location.
  • Redirected Retail - this means that we are purchasing from a distributor and then reselling. There can be many variations on this as the distributor can ship to earthSOS or the end user. As well, how far is our distributor from the original manufacturer.
  • earthSOS manufactured - we at earthSOS have created the product or service.

In many instances products are made of many products brought together, like your computer, so we will do our best to inform you of what we can, starting with the finished product.

Thank you for supporting earthSOS by looking at our products and services and we will do our best to make any purchasing decisions easy and comfortable. We will do this by offering our own customer service as well as working with companies that have a standing reputation and/or a proven earth friendly product.

Web-Based Business

At the same time that we are great supporters of local business, we at earthSOS see the finer points of online business. Web business is unique and we cannot deny the growing global community. Even though web business isn't local, it can be and it allows for consumers to purchase directly from the manufacturer - eliminating the retail tier and thus unnecessary transportation waste. It also reaches out to global markets while cutting out the multilevel process, and makes products easily available to people in areas that might not have the product available.

Other than the amount of transportation waste produced by buying from a local store or through the Internet (and it is hard to tell sometimes if buying through the net did really cut down on the transport waste) is where does your money go from the purchase? Even with the growing global economy you support your local community/city/state/country if you buy products from companies that are based closer to home. Especially if that company buys the products and services it needs to function from local businesses as well.

Some local companies are part of chains and large corporations though so the money might not actually stay in your community even though the location you purchased from is based in your community. Or you could say that most of it leaves but some stays and pays the locally employed people there. The variety of situations is high and net-based business is in the same boat.

Net business cuts down on waste, allows companies to hit global markets, allows markets to purchase what was not available before, but still plays the game of where is the money going.

With all this in mind we do our best to offer products and services that are earth friendly or more so then the current models, only deal with quality companies, and not sell anything that increases transport waste by purchasing through us in comparison to a different company. As well, when buying the products and services we need to run earthSOS we will endeavor to buy from local companies, then within the same province/state, then country, then continent, and then the global market.
